The anticipation for Thursday’s Nintendo Direct came to a screeching halt after the final two characters: Ken and Inceniroar were revealed in the opening trailer. Sakurai quickly confirmed that the Direct would focus on the games other features: such as Spirits mode (a revamped version of the Game’s Trophies, combined with the sticker upgrades from Brawl’s Story mode with a little twist), online changes, and the first look at the new Adventure Mode.
But that’s not why you’re here. You’re here because you, like myself and many others, believed the infamous “Grinch Leak” to be true. You were waiting for that Earth shaking Isaac reveal, a puzzling Banjo-Kazooie trailer or that blinding Geno trailer, but your hopes were cut severely after Sakurai informed us of Ken and Macho Man Randy Tiger were the final two spots on Smash Ultimate’s roster.
A lot of fans are highly upset, and that’s to be anticipated, but let’s not act like this game isn’t already loaded with amazing content. DLC has been confirmed with at least 6 brand new characters including this precious reveal below:
Which would put our total cast at 81 characters at the VERY LEAST with a ton of spirits and a pretty reasonable adventure mode. That on top of the tons of varied modes you can play, the return of every former playable character and over 300 stage options means that there’s a crap ton of content here. At some point we’re complaining just to complain. You can argue that the team didn’t control hype well and that Ken/PokeKane should have been revealed in an earlier Direct with Simon Belmont and King K. Rool being saved for this final showcase. You could also argue about “ignoring the wishes of fans” but that wouldn’t be a legitimate argument because we finally got 3 of the most requested characters of all-time on board.
I’m not saying you can’t have other wishes or desires, but downplaying the massiveness of this release because we didn’t get our obscure RPG* boys seems a bit….over-reactive. Let’s slow down a bit and enjoy the ride.
(*Isaac is deconfirmed but I’ve still got Geno hopes)
