Teen Titans Go! – It’s Not Teen Titans and It’s Time To Stop Crying About It

Okay. [in my Ron Voice] AJ is gonna be mad. Courtney is gonna be furious. But I have to finally admit. Teen Titans Go! deserves my respect, it was a hard conclusion to come to, but after watching marathons with my one-year old, I have to admit, it's a damn good show.

Okay. [in my Ron Voice]

AJ is gonna be mad.

Courtney is gonna be furious.

But I have to finally admit. Teen Titans Go! deserves my respect, it was a hard conclusion to come to, but after watching marathons with my one-year old, I have to admit, it’s a damn good show.

Now let me explain.

First and foremost, the two major reasons why people hate this show is because the Original Teen Titans series ended on a Cliffhanger, and TTG directly replaced Young Justice. Those two things are why most fans can’t seem to give this a chance, but we have to remember that this network isn’t about the older generation that grew up on Teen Titans (though I was 14 when it first aired and 17 when it ended), it’s about the younger generation that now watches this network. Also, this show has great comedic writing and its self-awareness is incredible. It’s not just all random drivel and slapstick antics, they lampshade and mock a lot of tropes that television shows hinge onto in order to survive.

It does a great job of deconstructing these, the main problem is that if you don’t really pay attention to television in that sense, you might not catch most of them. Even without that, you should notice the 4th wall breaks and Easter Eggs (if Cartoon Network didn’t beat that into you already). The program is very self-aware, especially when it comes to how much people hate it:

The ironic thing about that video is that there are comments underneath about how they’re glad “Young Justice stuck it to this crappy show”, failing to realize that the show is delivering a take that to itself and fans simultaneously.  It’s not meant to be taken super seriously, so don’t, if you put a different outfit and a name change on each character with their same personalities the same group crying about it would say it’s clever and witty. We never gave it a shot from the jump, no matter how clever the show actually is.

I get it. It stays in HEAVY rotation on CN, it’s always on and has at times bumped great shows like Adventure Time, We Bare Bears and Steven Universe, and it’s obviously adored by network execs. CN is definitely trying to make it like their version of SpongeBob SquarePants, much to the chagrin of other programming. That being said, I should note that Cartoon Network isn’t really for our generation anymore, and that should be obvious, we’re not entitled to any air times or air slots, and we aren’t the demographic they’re aiming their commercial advertising towards. Even if there is a niche out there for 20 and 30 somethings who still watch cartoons aside from with their children, we’re more secondary than anything. Once you can get over your own personal feelings regarding the way that Teen Titans and Young Justice got ditched and appreciate the show for what it is, you’ll begin to like it a bit more. It’s not a favorite of mine, but I went from utter annoyance when the show would air, to a bit of appreciation. I can watch an episode or two, laugh, and then go to something else.

  1. Neither is Nickelodeon, but they have been appealing to both our demographics and their demographics with Great Success. I don’t understand why Cartoon Network is not doing the Same Thing.
